PZW Annual Boxing day 10tt, Leedstown.

It would seem that a lot of people were fed up with the pain of Christmas day and wanted to come out on Boxing day for a more appealing sort of pain, as the turnout for years annual PZW Boxing day 10tt must be our best yet.

With myself and Matt timekeeping and Andrew, Richard G and Peter Marshalling (If there were any others sorry I forgot, was having a mare!) we were hoping for a smooth running. However several things were against us from the off.

First problem was that I spent the evening chatting to Mr Jack Daniels, so it meant I got out of bed rather late. Second, Matt had too much Christmas cheer and forgot to put the numbers in order and so it meant we started at 24 and finishing with 100, with a good old 69 thrown in there as well! The third problem was that I was too busy enjoying the Funk Soul tunes coming from my car at the start line and killed my battery, which meant I had to call for rescue in the form of the inlaws! Doh!

The wind felt cold and from all directions, so today wasn’t going to be particularly fast, coupled with some greasy corners here and there.
Luke thought he had this one in the bag, right up until the start line when I informed him that Jake had signed on late and promptly set the fastest time of the day, a story he will tell down Chacewater……

A good number of PZW riders turned out, along with Luke’s mum, Janet whom managed a very respectable time. Big well done to Hari, John, Tristan and Henry for finishing in the top 10 and a special mention to Dale for blasting round on his fixie, good effort.

Also a big thanks to One and All CC for boosting the numbers, cheers guys.

Wheelers roller racing champs 2011.

A cold, windy, rainy night in December, and a light shines from the window of the Long Rock Institute. A gathering of some sort. An obscure, cult-like tribe come to act out a decades-old ritual.

Yes, the annual Wheelers roller racing championship is underway, and first up it’s John Butt versus perennial rollers winner Mike Tonkin. John is aboard his time trial machine and pounds out a time of 40.6 seconds, to beat Mike’s 41.3 by nearly a second.

Next it’s John Faz taking on Damian, and initially the clash is a sartorial one – John in race gear, straps of his bib shorts dangling round by his saddle, while Damien sports jeans, merely donning a pair of cycling shoes. Such casual dressing is quickly punished, as John finishes in 46.1, to Damian’s 69.2.

Over in the corner, interesting things are happening on the undercard. Cake. Lots of it. In different shapes and sizes. Garry’s walnut – moist with occasional hard bits – is doing battle with Sandy’s peanut and choccy effort, and it seems Garry has the winner’s bouquet in the bag. In an attempt to reel in the breakaway however, Sandy’s cake makes a surge, with several consumers washing their slice down with pints of the Star’s finest. Finally, the lemon drizzle, ginger nuts and other assorted gateaux are mere domestiques and can only look on as the walnut crosses the line with arms aloft.

Meanwhile, Dale, in an attempt to relive his Wheelers glory days, tries to get the better of Richard, but goes down in 42 seconds to 47.

And so to round 2. John edges out Richard 42.2 to 44.5. Mike is finding his legs as he dishes it out to Faz 42.2 to 44.6, while Dale records 48 seconds to beat Dave by 3.1 seconds.

First up in round 3 sees Mike versus Dave, and Mike plays it tactically to record 47 seconds compared to Dave’s 54.2. Then John Butt locks horns with Damien, and while the hands of the dial are seemingly locked together for most of the contest, John wins in 42.4 to Damien’s 44.8.

‘Eye of the Tiger’ is thus playing in our minds as the final dawns. Mike versus John B, in a re-run of their first round duel. Who has the legs? Who has anything left in the tank? Has Mike been bluffing? In a blur of rotating legs it’s neck and neck till the line, with Mike running out the winner in 42.68 to John’s 42.73.

It was always going to be close, but Mike gets the glory for another year, while John retires to lick his wounds.
