Julius Jennings Coaching

Julius Jennings Coaching

Having taken a coaching course and coached friends for the last two years I am now taking the next step of offering my services to any rider.

Cycling is an expensive sport and we spend thousands on bikes, wheels and equipment. All the equipment in the world WON'T make you a BETTER rider unless you train correctly. I'm offering a simple coaching structure with no hidden extras. For £30 a month that’s £1 a day you can become a better rider.

What is in the package?
Initial consultation to discuss your requirements
Heart rate zones
Bike fitting
Weekly training programs
Email and phone contact as and when you need to.

I've always maintained that with the correct coaching tailored to the individual rider, everyone can improve beyond his or her expectations. It doesn't matter how long you have been cycling, what level you are or how old you are. There is ALWAYS room for improvement. If you read the endorsements by my riders you can judge for yourselves. My website is in the process of been designed. In the meantime if you wish to discuss anything with me please contact me on. I'm not a talented rider but DO KNOW how to train properly for time trials AND road races.

Started cycling when I was 15 years old, 30 years ago! Winning crits, time trials and road races
Had three seasons in France as a French 1st Cat
Had 11 years out the sport
Started again in 2002

2002
A hard year but lost 3 stone
By the end of 2002 after just 9 months training did a 55.44

2003
10 open wins
10 second places
BAR winner South West

2004
5 open time trial wins
10 second places
PB at all distances

2005
12 open time trial wins
2nd BAR south west
10 second places
PB at all distances

2006
18 open time trial wins
Second or third all other open time trials
Bar champion again southwest
PB's at all distances

2007
4 open time trial wins
15 second places!!!!!!
Two road wins
Second cat and nearly 1st cat

Current PB's
10 mile 20.31
25 mile 52.20
50 mile 1.47.44
100 mile 3.58.21

PROBABLY the most consistent rider in the southwest over the last 5 years. How many other riders have won events every season they have ever compete. [Julius Jennings email jjrenn2002@yahoo.co.uk tel. 01392 421152 16/12/07]

Nick Harwood

I have been around the sport of cycling for more than 30 years in many of its forms. Road racing, time trialling, mountain biking and triathlon to name but a few and with varying degrees of success.

I have in recent years decided to get a little more serious and this has resulted in some improvement. However I have always wondered what sort of increases in performance could be made with a good coach. I use the term good reservedly. There are plenty of good intentioned people who have offered friendly advice. But I believe in the adage if you want good advice seek out someone who has done what you want to do.

Often times these people will not want to disclose their hard won secrets. But from my first conversation with Julius on the subject I knew Id found what I needed. Julius had had an incredible season in 2006 and if I could get to discover what it took to compete at that level I was interested.

And so it was that around the middle of the 2007 season I approached Julius for some advice. From the out set I have found him genuinely concerned about my perception of his help. He does not promise miracles; and everyone’s expectations are different. But what I have felt is his real ability to perceive where you are at and tell you what you need to hear not necessarily what you want to hear.

He will challenge your fixed beliefs in what you are good and bad at. Yes you will get training schedules, that themselves are motivational, but his help extends far beyond this. Its his words of encouragement when things aren’t going so good that keep you motivated. If you are after a short cut forget it. What I have learnt most from Julius’ help is that the secret is hard work.

I recommend him unreservedly whether you seek improvement against the watch or on the road. See below!! This year I have achieved way beyond my expectations. Here are some of my results.

TIME TRIAL RESULTS
North Devon Whs 10 mile tt club record 15/9/07 Andover Whs P613 20.19
North Devon Whs Series 10 mile tt Trophy North Devon Whs Open 25 27/8/07 1st 56.48
Tavistock Whs Open 10 27/6/07 1st 21.41

ROAD RACING
Scored 85 points gained 2nd cat license

I used to look at some of the top riders and wonder how they turned out some of these untouchable times they were producing. And one day after speaking to Julius Jennings after an event with the same thoughts I asked him that question, how, what do you do to ride that fast. The reply was simple, training; any one can do what I do. Really!

With that Julius set us up to a simple max heart rate test at home on the turbo and from there he started to draw up a training schedule which has taken me from a mid level club rider to some one who has achieved results that I once used to think were for the super talented.

Training is hard, if you really want the results. But the training schedules are well laid out and simple to follow. During the winter periods when you are building your base I can remember on several occasions when riding with my club mates on a Sunday morning that once I used to be feeling strong that my club members now seem to be riding stronger than me. A reassuring word from Julius was always there to keep me focused. The net result of the careful structured training has given me results well beyond me expectation.

When I did my first 50 mile TT I wanted the challenge but didn’t necessary feel that I could race that distance, Julius had more belief in me to do the distance and in a good time than me as he had guided me through training. With his knowledge and skill on how to ride the event not only did I do the event with in a superb time I also walk away from the event as the South West Divisional Champion overall and for the Vet.

2006 Season 2007 Season 10 Mile 22:32 10 Mile 21:43 25 Mile 59:11 25 Mile 54:48 50 Mile N/A 50 Mile 1.56:15 South West Division 50 tt Champion 3rd Vet in the BAR 2 Open Event Wins 1 - 2nd Open prize 3 - 1st Vet prizes 1 - 2nd Vet prize 10, 10 two up, 25 and 50 Club Records

If you want the results and more importantly prepared to do the hard training Julius can take you there, you can also mix it with the best and Win. These results have been brought on by careful structured training with words of encouragement from one of the top riders in the South West. I can personally recommend any one who has the desire and the mind set to succeed to follow Julius Jennings coaching to achieve though dream times and results.

The Great Name Debate Continues ...

The epic Wheelers club run group naming debate puts me in mind of vinyl albums. (Now, for club members under the age of 40, these were what we used to use for listening to music. Hang on...under the age of 40...that'll be no-one then).

The thing was, there was always Side A and Side B. Anyway, one day, while fingering a slab of vinyl before putting it on my deck, I noticed, instead of side A and side B, this band had called theirs 'Up side' and 'Down side.' (At the time this was unnutterably cool. Subversive even).

So, how about, for the two club runs, Up group and Down group? Or, as other bands were soon doing following my revelatory experience, 'East' and 'West' group, or 'Morning' and 'Evening' group.

Closer to home, how about Testosterone group and Amphetamine group? Or Blood Doping group and EPO group? Gruppo Operation Puerto and Gruppo Police Raid have a nice ring to them. [Lloyd Peters 6/12/07]

PZW Christmas Breakfast Ride
Long Rock to Smokey Joe's at Redruth
Sunday 23rd December

This year's Christmas breakfast ride will be incorporated into the normal Sunday club run, with the usual 9.00am start from Long Rock. Everyone is welcome, no matter which group you ride with. The emphasis is on social rather than physical. If you prefer, you can ride straight from home and meet us en route or at Smokey Joe's. This could be an important building block in your training programme leading up to the Boxing Day '10' - the time trial that really matters. [15/12/07]

England lose football but Penzance Wheelers romp home
November 21st Venue The Bath Inn, Penzance

Penzance Wheelers entered their 1st ever pub quiz, approx 15 teams, lead by Matt Southam. Our team comprised of Terry Mappin, Mark Travis, Mike Tonkin, Andrew Mc Pherson & Neil Hollow. After 8 closely fought rounds Wheelers romped home with a resounding win with a points total of 67 from a possible 80 and a maximum 15 out of 15 from a secondary quiz thanks to Andrew the anagram supremo. Another quiz is to be scheduled for January, any Wheelers prepared to challenge The A Team's domination please make yourselves known at the next Wheelers meeting or Sunday ride. [Neil Hollow 23/11/07]

PZW Curry Evening

Important winter refuelling event or end of season relaxation, depending on your viewpoint. Expert alibis provided for wives/girlfriends/boyfriends if required. Bikes and tights optional, although discouraged. A wheelchair might give you an unexpected advantage. Riders under the age of 40 must bring a signed parental consent form. Riders over 40 must bring a medical certificate signed by the club doctor. With due regard to their seniority, any rider over 60 with a current BC racing licence will have their expenses paid by the others. Expect to find all the usual suspects present. If you're coming, let Mark Haynes know for table booking purposes, if you want to take advantage of the alibi offer, send £5 cash to Tony Farnell. [23/11/07]

New - Alternative (Slower) Club Rides on Sundays

Neil Hollow and Terry Mappin are trying to start a slower group for the Sunday club rides, we will still start at Longrock at 9 o,clock, the ride length should be somewhere between 25 & 30 miles and ridden at the pace of the slowest rider, if anyone wants to contact me they can ring me on 07968 835712 or e-mail me on neilhollow@hotmail.co.uk

1st ride will be 5th August and every 2 weeks from then. [Neil Hollow 28/07/07]

Important Safety Notice

If you are planning to do the final PZW club '10" of the season on Thursday 23rd August, please read this carefully.

1. When waiting for the start, please keep in single file and well to the side of the road or on the grass verge.

2. Please do not do U-turns by the start area while warming up.

3. Please do not warm up in the vicinity of the start area, there are lots of suitable alternative roads.

4. When finishing, please do not stop by the finish officials. Continue riding straight back to the car parking area. The finish officials will bring clothing and results back to the car park area when the last rider has finished.

5. Drafting. If you are overtaken during the race, please drop back 25 metres and do not hold the wheel of the rider who has overtaken you. If you subsequently find yourself catching this rider, you may legally overtake.

PZW does want you to enjoy these races without too much formality, but at the moment rider safety is seriously being compromised and the timekeeping officials are being distracted from their job leading to inaccuracies in the results.

Have an enjoyable and safe ride in the next race. [16/08/07]

PZW Club Champs 2007

The dates have now been fixed for this year's PZW championships. If you wanted to ride in the road race championships, then wake up, you've already missed it. It would be great if we could have a massive turn-out for the various time trial championships this year.

The first one is the '10' on Wednesday 20th June at 7.00pm in conjunction with the Truro CC club race. Signing on will be at Tresillian Village Hall. Defending champion is Tony Farnell.

There are no '50's in Cornwall this year, so the PZW championships will take place on Sunday 1st July at the Plymouth CCC Open '50'. This is a well-organised race with an extensive prize list - I think last year just about everyone who finished received a prize and they were good prizes too. Defending champion is Dave Henderson. You will have to enter for this race 2 weeks in advance, so get your entry in now and start arranging to share transport.

Next is the circuit TT championships on our home course at Leedstown on Thursday 12th July in conjunction with one of our regular club TTs. Defending champion is Mark Haynes. No excuse for missing this one.

Then we have some sun-bathing time before the '25' on Sunday 9th September at Tresillian in conjunction with the St Austell Wheelers club TT. You can enter on the day for this one. Defending champion is Tony Farnell. Finally, on Sunday 9th October there is our hill climb and cake eating championships to round off the season. Jeff is the record holder and defending champion here, but I'm not sure who won the cake eating because I think Rhys had a morning in bed. [Tony Farnell 9/06/07]

Club Kit Has Arrived

For those who ordered new club kit, it has now arrived and can be collected from Cyclelogic. If you are taking advantage of the one-off 25% reduction offer (only available on a single item of kit), then send the receipt, together with a stamped, self-addressed enevlope, to club treasurer Mark Travis. Don't forget that Cyclelogic are moving to their new premises next week. [7/5/07]

Thanks From Terry

Terry Mappin would like to thank everyone who has given him support in his recent period of ill health. He still needs more tests, but hopes to be back in circulation soon. [2/05/07]

Club Monday Meetings 2007

As from Monday 26th Feb the club meetings will be held at the Bath Inn Penzance. It,s been mentioned at the last few meetings that the "Magpies environment has become very smokey". The Bath Inn has a no smoking bar, a function room with 52" TV should we have film nights again, and rather large beer garden so during summer months if people wish to cycle to meetings they can be held "al fresco" hope this is satisfactory for everyone. [Neil Hollow 24/02/07]

Racing Guide for New Members

The cheapest introduction to racing is undoubtedly time trialling. If you are a paid up member of PZW you can enter any time trial. For local club races, entry fees are usually about £1.50. Turn up about 30 minutes before the advertised start time, pay your entry fee, collect a number, which gives you your start time, and enjoy your ride. For open races you need to enter 2 weeks in advance on an official form (download from the CTT website or ask someone for a photocopy) and entry fees are £5.50-7.50. See Races page for details of open races in 2007. A full club race calender will appear when finalised. No special bike is needed, although you will see many expensive and fancy machines. Don't be put off by this - most of the owners are no better than you. Some clip on aero bars are the first priority, followed by some aero wheels. My fastest ever '10' was done on a road bike, with road wheels.

Road races are more expensive. To enter most races you need to have a British Cycling road racing licence (details form BC website). A few races will take entries on the line and you can pay for a day licence, but if you are going to do more than a couple of races then this is an expensive way of doing it. PZW are promoting 3 criterion races at RAF Portreath - a traffic free circuit that provides an ideal environment if you are new to road racing. The circuit is only 1.25 miles, so if you are dropped by the bunch, you can cruise around until they lap you, then hang on for some more training.

There are also regular mountain bike and cyclo-cross races in Cornwall and Devon in which various Wheelers participate. Details are to be found on the internet. [5/02/07]

PZW Club Kit Order 2007

Do you want any new club kit? This is probably the only chance you will have this year!

Cycle Logic in Helston have again kindly offered to provide the Penzance Wheelers clothing. As most active members of the club will be aware, a number of us have hoping to get hold of some club kit for the winter and the fast approaching racing season. Unfortunately we have been unable to do this as we need at least 15 individual items of clothing to enable us to place an order.

A number of riders have recently contacted me requesting club clothing and it should be possible to place an order, providing we require at least 15 items. In order to receive the clothing for the start of the racing season, we will place the order on Monday 28th January (following the club dinner on Sat 27th) so anyone requiring clothing for the coming season will need to contact me to place their order before this date. Prices unfortunately aren't the cheapest, but the gear is quality stuff and well worth the money compared to budget gear, especially the comfy bibshorts!

Sizes available are;
3 - Small
4 - Medium
5 - Large

Sizes 2 (extra small) and 6 (extra large) are also available as a special order and have a 20% surcharge. From memory I think there are some size 2 shorts and jersey at Cycle Logic but they are childrens sizes really. I suspect most people will need size 3 or 4.

Short Sleeve Jersey £40
Long Sleeve Jersey £43
Gilet (windproof vest) £36
Winter Jacket Windtex £55
Winter Jacket Roubaix (fleece lined) £50
Short sleeve skinsuit £55
Long sleeve skinsuit £60
Bib shorts £41.50

Due to a previously poor collection rate by our members, we need to pay for all items other than s/s jerseys and bibshorts on ordering, please contact me to arrange pre payment by cheque made payable to Cycle Logic. Anyone needing bib shorts or jerseys, just let me know what size you need and we can just add it to the list. Anyone considering PZW kit will need to order it now for the coming racing season, as this will probably be the only order for the next 12 months. There is approx a 6 week wait for the order, Please email me on markhaynes1@hotmail.com, or phone 01326 313914/07789375633 evenings if you're interested. [Mark Haynes 5/01/07]

Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive 2007

Sunday 13th May

Two courses - 100miles or 100 kilometres. Have you entered yet? If not, perhaps it might be a good idea to enter sooner rather than later - most British cyclosportives seem to fill up soon after entries open. You can find out more details and enter online at Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive 2007. [Tony Farnell 15/11/06]

Club Dinner and Presentation Evening Saturday 27th January

A really enjoyable evening with a large turnout. Some good beer, plenty of grub, loads of raffle prizes, presentations admirably performed by Steve Coram of Cyclelogic and adroitly co-ordinated by Rhys. Thanks once again to Phil and Lisa for organising the dinner so efficiently and to Mike for all his work preparing the awards, trophies and plaques.
